Ban on disposable vapes

The SNP Scottish Government launched a review on them in January 2023, with the relevant Scottish Government Minister saying “Not only are single-use vapes bad for public health, they are also bad for the environment. From litter on our streets, to the risk of fires in waste facilities, there are issues which need to be addressed urgently. We will consider the evidence and expert advice and come forward with policy options, which could include a potential ban on single-use vapes.

During the recent programme for Government, First Minister Humza Yousaf said his government would hold a consultation on a single-use vape ban.

The SNP have asked Westminster to consider the option of a ban on disposable vapes, and consider banning the sale of vapes to young people.

However, powers over banning vapes lie only with Westminster.

Had Tory policies on blocking Scottish laws been in place before, things like our innovative minimum unit pricing for alcohol legislation would have been blocked. Our Minimum Unit Pricing has reduced deaths directly caused by alcohol consumption by 13.4% and hospital admissions by 4.1%, with the largest reductions were seen in men and those living in the 40% most deprived areas.

The SNP call on the UK Government to do more to explore the side effects and possible need to greater regulate vapes, or devolve to Scotland the power to do so.

The SNP will continue to monitor disposable vapes, and to protect Scotland’s ability to pass legislation without a Westminster veto
