Southside MP welcomes Braes shopping centre investment

Stewart McDonald MP has welcomed news that Glasgow City Council has approved funding for improvements to the Braes shopping centre in Castlemilk, which paves the way for a household name supermarket to set up in the area.

The Council's Place Fund investment of £2Million means the conditions will be put in place to allow for a household name supermarket to set up in the heart of the Castlemilk community.

The Place Fund is a Scottish Government capital fund for local authorities to allocate, working collaboratively with local communities, to develop projects under a variety of themes.

“For some time there has been concern that the local shopping centre, The Braes, is no longer fit for purpose and requires significant investment, with particular concern being expressed that Castlemilk, and its surrounding areas, no longer enjoy the benefits of having a major supermarket.

“I am therefore delighted that this funding will pave the way for a supermarket to be set up in the heart of the community, which would provide vital services and job opportunities for the local people.

“The Castlemilk Community and Business Association have long campaigned to secure a supermarket into this area of my constituency and, having supported them all the way, I am thrilled their efforts have reached this point."
