MP welcomes Asda support for Southside projects

Stewart McDonald, SNP MP for Glasgow South has welcomed the announcement that Asda will be donating money to charities in the constituency.

The funds have been raised from the single-use carried bag charge, introduced by the Scottish Government in 2014, which requires retail outlets to charge 5p for every bag used by customers.

Almost £3,500 is being donated by Asda to projects in the constituency, split between the Castlemilk Timebank, Castlemilk based Women Against Violent Environments, and Holmlea Gardens Association in Cathcart.

Commenting, Stewart McDonald MP said:

“I warmly welcome these donations to causes in my constituency. The Scottish Government introduced this bag charge as a way of both helping the environment and raising money for charity, both of which have been incredibly successful.

“The three projects in the Southside of Glasgow which are sharing these donations are all incredibly worthwhile groups which do huge amounts of good and it is a testament to the hard work of the staff and volunteers that Asda chose them for these donations.”
