MP supports call for increased commitment to Global Fund

Stewart McDonald, MP for Glasgow South, was one of several MPs to sign a letter to the new Secretary of State for International Development, Priti Patel, calling on the UK to increase its financial contribution to the Global Fund.

The signatories have called on the UK Governemnt to increase its commitment at the upcoming Pledging Conference, in Montreal in September, by 20% to £1.2 billion, which will help save more than eight million lives and avert the spread of 41.4 million new infections.

The Global Fund is the principal international financing institution that aims to end the Malaria, AIDS and TB epidemics. To date, the Fund has helped save 17 million lives and led to a one-third decline in deaths from the three diseases.

Many other donors (including Canada, the USA and Japan) have already stepped up and increased their contributions by at least 20%.

A strong Global Fund pledge is essential to delivering UK aid objectives, and support for the Fund is critical to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals' target, save millions more lives and end these three killer epidemics.
