MP hosts first public meeting in bid to save Glasgow job centres

Stewart McDonald MP hosted the first in a series of public meetings in attempt to save Glasgow job centres last night.
The Glasgow South MP was joined by the PCS Union at Castlemilk Community Centre as they discussed ways to oppose the planned closure of the job centre in Castlemilk.

The meeting took place in response to the UK Government's announcement in December that they plan to close half of the job centres across Glasgow.

After the meeting, Stewart McDonald said:

"I want to thank everyone who came along to the meeting in Castlemilk and PCS Scotland for the support that they have given this campaign.

"The mood of the meeting was unanimous that these planned closures are wrong and that we must fight them. The Government’s ill-thought out plans will have an adverse impact on thousands of people across my constituency and it is my intention to work with local people, organisations and politicians from all parties to save both Castlemilk and Langside Jobcentres.

"Government cuts and austerity has already hammered many of my constituents. It is vital that as many people as possible respond to the government’s consultation telling them how wrong these proposals are and that we unite in opposition to this extraordinary attack on the city of Glasgow."

Lynn Henderson PCS National Officer commented:

"The proposal to close half of the job centres in Glasgow is nonsensical. If they go ahead they will have a devastating impact on the worst socio economic areas in the City of Glasgow.

"Our very clear view is that DWP need 'pause' these proposals and subject them to public and Parliamentary scrutiny."
