Glasgow South's Newlands jobcentre rolls out Universal Credit

Stewart McDonald MP has urged constituents to be aware of their rights regarding Universal Credit, as the new benefit system was rolled out at Newlands jobcentere.

Under the new benefit system, and the Scotland Act 2016, the Scottish Government can provide choices to people when claiming Universal Credit.

The regulations will give people claiming Universal Credit in Scotland the choice of:being paid Universal Credit twice a month rather than monthly; and having their Universal Credit housing element being paid directly to their landlords.

Commenting, Stewart McDonald said:

"With Universal Credit Scottish choices the Scottish Government are doing what they can with the limited powers available, which will allow more people to have greater control over their household budget. However, this offering in no way fixes many of the problems with the Universal Credit roll-out.

“The sooner that comprehensive welfare powers are in the hands of the Scottish Parliament the better, because that will mean that they are able to make decisions that are in the interest of Scotland.

"In the meantime, I'd urge everyone be aware of their rights when claiming Universal Credit, and follow the Scottish Government's advice on Scottish Choices online."
