Call for criminal investigation into alleged leak of security information

The SNP has called for a full criminal police investigation into the alleged leaking of national security information by Tory Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson MP.

Stewart McDonald MP said Theresa May must immediately suspend Mr Williamson from the Conservative Party, and clarify whether the UK government believes Mr Williamson has broken the law - after the Prime Minister said there was "compelling evidence" that he was responsible for the unauthorised disclosure of national security information.

The SNP Defence spokesperson said the Tory Party was "putting the interests and national security of Scotland and the UK at risk" in its increasingly shameful leadership battle.

Commenting, SNP Defence spokesperson Stewart McDonald MP said:

"This is a truly disgraceful episode from Tory Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson. He has let down a great many people, none more than those in uniform who protect us.

"It is completely unacceptable that the Tories are putting the interests and national security of Scotland and the UK at risk in an increasingly dirty and shameful leadership battle.

"The UK government must clarify if they believe that Mr Williamson has broken the law, and if so, the matter must be passed to the police for a full criminal investigation.

"Given the gravity of the allegations, Theresa May must immediately suspend Mr Williamson from the Conservative Party. Mr Williamson should also consider whether he can continue as an MP.

“With Gavin Williamson gone, this is now the 42nd person to have been sacked or resigned from Theresa May’s government since she became Prime Minister. This appalling, shambolic Tory government is clearly not fit for office.”Parliament logo
