SNP Defence
spokesperson Stewart McDonald MP, has said that the 2,000 job losses
announced by defence contractor BAE Systems across the UK are ‘deeply
worrying’ and ‘completely avoidable.’
Stewart McDonald has also
said that he is asking BAE Systems for clarity about how the cuts will
hit the Eurofighter project and on the impact on a highly skilled
workforce at plants in the North of England – as well as for clarity on
any further threats to BAE’s Scottish workforce.
Stewart McDonald MP - SNP Defence spokesperson said:
‘’This is deeply worrying news for BAE workforces across the UK – including jobs losses at sites in Scotland, but with particular concern around the
Eurofighter Typhoon project.
‘’I am asking BAE Systems for clarity on how these completely avoidable job
losses will hit the Eurofighter project. This will mainly hit plants in
the North of England – and I want assurances about any further threats there
and to Scottish jobs on the Clyde and at other BAE installations In Scotland ,
in addition to the jobs being lost today in Fife. I am sending SNP
support to the highly skilled and internationally recognised workforces -
all across the UK.
‘’The Tories have presided over endless cuts to conventional defence.
They need to stop all their Brexit in-fighting and divisions and get
on with the day job.’’
