Personal Tax Allowance

The tax-free personal allowance is a reserved matter and so is dictated by the Tory Government.

The SNP voted against freezing personal allowances until 2027-28.

The Scottish Government believes in progressive tax policy believing that those with the higher household incomes should pay a higher share of their income in tax.

As a result, on average, households in the lower half of the income distribution are £400 better off a year than they would be in the rest of the UK.

Overall, around 58% of households are better off under the Scottish tax and social security system than they would be in the rest of the UK.

Ahead of the Budget the SNP called for the Chancellor to prioritise public spending over tax giveaways ahead of the election, a position which is supported by 75% of voters who want taxes kept at current levels or increased, with greater spending on public services.
