Statement on HM Queen Elizabeth II

It is a matter of great sadness and regret to many in Glasgow South, and across the British Isles that we note the passing of Her Majesty, The Queen.

Her life will be remembered as one of dedication, and of upholding the highest ideals of public service.

Her Majesty, The Queen had a deep and enduring love for Scotland, and our own dear green place, Glasgow.

In our own small part of the city, I know that she greatly enjoyed her visit to officially open the Burrell collection.

My thoughts are with her family at this time of great sorrow, grief and loss.

Statement on UKVI

My office continues to deal with a large volume of immigration and asylum applications. It has become clear that, since the UK left the EU, there is a severe backlog in the Home Office looking at and processing cases.

Under the current UK Government’s stewardship, the Home Office’s response to the immigration and asylum system has declined to such a level that the stated UKVI response time of 20 working days for MP enquiries regarding constituent cases is rarely, if ever met.

My staff and I will continue to make representations to the Home Office for those who have submitted a new application or have had an update on their current case.

If you have already been in touch with my office regarding your case, unless you hear otherwise from me or the Home Office, please assume we are waiting to hear back and will get in touch with you as soon as we have an update from the Home Office.

Unfortunately, our representations cannot speed up the Home Office’s processing of applications.

The department’s response to our asylum and immigration has been one of obfuscation, misdirection, and sheer denial of reality.

I will continue to fight for the rights of those seeking safe refuge in the UK, and to speak out against the UK Government’s cynical, arbitrary, and increasingly authoritarian disregard for the lives of those most in need of support.
